Using IoT to investigate errors on a power plant
Background and challenge
When errors occur on a power plant, it can be very difficult to determine what is causing the error. And because of the plants being huge in size, it is rarely possible for the staff to be present on the place of the error at the right time in order to see what is actually happening.
Because of this challenge, Ørsted had initiated a POC that should test the feasibility of using consumer electronics to help the staff locate the error and needed help in maturing the POC, sensors and data collection in order to distribute the POC to the plants
The ambition was clear – together with Ørsted we needed to prove that low-cost consumer grade electronics actually could replace equipment that Ørsted normally would spend large amounts of resources on.
Process and Approach
We initiated a track to build a Raspberry Pi setup with various sensors that could be attached to the device depending on, what needed to be investigated. A dashboard was set up and made accessible for the plant staff where they could monitor the data from the sensors.
We further looked into the current status of the POC and consulted on maturing the setup and making it possible to deploy and ship to the plant staff in a condition where it would be plug and play for them to use.
This included changing the underlying architecture and cloud infrastructure and making scripts and images for the Raspberry Pi in order to make it easy to maintain - also remotely.
The solution has been a success as the project managed to deliver on its initial premise about saving resources by using consumer grade electronics.
It has opened up for new ways of working in parts of Ørsted and the learnings that Ørsted got on IoT in this project is helping them going forward in new IoT projects.
